  Ambler GKK Kihon Kumite #2 – Ukeno Defend/Attack

 

Objective
  1. Show evolution of defensive Kihon Ido into attacking Kihon Ido. 
  2. Practice close contact movement and coordination.
  3. Have a practical drill for beginners that is challenging for advanced belts.

Part 1a – Individual – Defend

0 Ready position
1 Step forward into L sanchin dachi, block L yoko uke then L gedan bari
2 Step forward into R sanchin dachi, block R yoko uke then R gedan bari
3 Step forward into L shiko dachi, block L gedan bari
4 Step forward into R shiko dachi, block R gedan bari
- Repeat above 4 steps as floor space permits
- Then, repeat above steps moving backward as floor space permits (recognize as beginning moves of Ukeno Kata)

2 Step forward into R sanchin dachi, strike L seiken tsuki chudan then R seiken tsuki gedan

4 Step forward into R shiko dachi, strike R seiken tsuki gedan
- Repeat above 4 steps as floor space permits
- Then, repeat above steps moving backward as floor space permits

 

Teaching Tips:

  • Beginners – teach single blocks/strikes first from sanchin, then introduce shiko dachi, then add second block/strike.  Begin striking sequence moving forward and blocking sequence moving backward.
  • Color belts:  add open hand blocks or Tensho blocks; increase and stagger pace to challenge coordination; emphasize hip movement and tantien; add breathing focus.
